A New Look at Note-Taking

Hello, everyone looking at this page.

I have made a recent discovery that challenges everything I have done in my classroom for the last sixteen years.  In the past when I saw a student doodling or drawing in my classroom, I assumed the student was not paying attention.  If I didn't directly call the student out from the front of the classroom, I would at least walk over to the student and quietly point out that he/she was not paying attention to what was being taught.  Of course, if the student made any type of objection, I wouldn't be listening because I knew, from my experience as a student, that if a student was drawing, he/she was not paying attention.

Well, I just watched a video that might have blown everything I have ever known out of the water.  In a Ted Talk video featuring Rachel Smith (click to view video), she discusses how students can effectively take notes using a combination of drawings and words.  While this might not be the perfect note-taking tool in every situation, it might help students who are more artistically inclined or those who have struggled with traditional note-taking styles such as Cornell notes.  Will these work for everyone?  Probably not, but I wanted to share this so those it might help can start taking advantage of this opportunity.

  1. I think i might have to actually try this. Because im one of the artistic students & im not all about taking regular notes or Cornell Notes. I feel like this might be a good/better way for me to take notes with the class. & Hopefully this helps me in the future. :)

  3. I did this back in 4th to 6th grade but every time I did it I was yelled at and was eventually broken of the habit. It worked great most of time but once or twice I would find myself focused on the drawing and not what we were supposed o be doing.

  4. I'm going to try this out and see if the drawing and putting words into the drawing helps me understand the notes more. And if it does help me, I will use this method in every class that I'm going to be taking notes in. Have a Happy Thanksgiving!

  5. In my mind i don't like this cause i'm not a very good drawer and never will be! I would have to stay to my way of learning and that's looking and just read over it and memorize it. But i mean i could give it a try one time but i'm saying i didn't like this how she did it.

  6. I really like this idea because when I am listening I always have to be doing something. I am not a very good artist but all you need to do is draw simple pictures to match with key points. I think it would work for me because if my hand is moving while I am listening I will pick up the information later.

  7. I've never even thought of this way to take notes, and I think it could help out a lot in different classes like history or biology. Whenever I try to study my notes, which look absolutely boring, I sometimes lose my track of thought. If I did take these kind of notes, I think it would be more beneficial because I'll have pictures that somewhat entertain me.

  8. I feel like this note-taking can be effective for everybody. The only thing is I feel like it would work better in some subjects verses others. For example, it would seem more fitting in history as opposed to math. It also seems to be more centered around a lecture or presentation form of teaching.

  10. I really like this style of note taking but I wouldn't like to do it myself. I feel that it takes too long and I like to take notes by just sitting there listening not by drawing or moving or anything. This is a great style of note taking and it would be amazing for some people but not me.

  11. This is a very good idea, because i like making little drawings. Its even better if drawing can help me learn more. Very fascinating to find a new twist to something that is boring to do.

  12. I think that I will like to take notes this way, it seems different. I usually get bored in History when we take notes, and I can definitely use this for that class.

  13. I think this style would be a good idea for some people but not for everyone. I don't think I would like it because writing words is a lot easier and more simple to understand. I think this style would work better if the person speaking was talking really fast and you didn't have time to write everything down word for word.

I really like this way becasue I usually dont like to just take notes I would rather be able to draw some while taking them that way I could understand whats actually going on because a lot of times when I take notes I'm mostly focusing on getting it written down and not what the notes are actually about so I like this way of taking visual notes.

  15. I think this would be a style worth trying, but my worry is that i would get distracted . And fail the class or a test because I was distracted.

  18. I actually find this kind of funny. You always have teachers yelling at kids or calling them in out in class for doodling on their papers, but in reality its just helping them understand things more clearly. This was definitely interesting to watch!

    1. It MIGHT be a situation where students are doing something to help themselves. I guarantee not every student is helping him/herself when doodling, but I as a teacher need to respect that it could be useful.

  19. I feel like there are alot of things people do that are not actually doing anything to prevent them from learning but the teachers sees it like that so they are unable to do that when it was actually helping.

  20. i think this would be very useful to some people but i don't believe it would be good for me because it would distract me more than what i already am by the other students but it could be very useful to a lot of people

  21. I have never thought of taking notes this way, but I think it could be useful for artistic people. I on the other hand, I am not very artistic so it would not be ideal for me. This way would take too long to drawl and would distract me from taking notes. Very interesting idea just not for me.

  22. This is a nice method and would be great for people that need pictures to explain what is going on in the notes. This method would be great for me if I would actually draw fast enough pictures and keep up with whoever is tell me the notes. For me I like perfection when its simple like drawing a picture I and if I don't i really bothers me. But other than that it would be VERY useful for me and I am able to see myself using this method in the future.
