How much time should students have to eat lunch? This isn't a question I have ever considered because I have always worked at VB and the length of the lunch period has always been a half hour. In this article from NPR, the author discusses how much time students should get and how much time they are actually getting.
I would be interested to know how students feel about this topic. As a teacher and former cafeteria monitor, I have always believed that less time in the cafeteria forced students to spend their time eating, not screwing around. Regardless of how you feel, it is an interesting article on a topic I wouldn't usually stop to consider.

ReplyDeleteI think a half an hour is to long for a lunch period. I finish my lunch in 10 mintues. So in my thought I think about 15-20 mintues for lunch is better. I get that people like to talk to there friends that why they could always add another 5 mintues if they took they mintue of an average kid eatting lunch. So in my thought I think it should made be no later then 20 minutes.
DeleteBeing someone who packs their lunch, I always have plenty of time to sit down and finish eating without having to rush. Though, sometimes I feel that people who buy can be challenged by time in order to finish their lunch by the end of the period, due to the wait in the lunch line. I think that having 30 minutes is plenty of time some days, and too little time some days. It all depends on how many people are in the lunch line, and how long it takes to get through.
ReplyDeleteI agree with 14hoehn. Speaking for myself I pack everyday so I have plenty of time to finish my lunch and still have time to socialize for a little bit until the bells rings. But speaking for the people who buy their lunch, I have bought before and it does seem on some days I am in a rush to get done. There is lunches that a bundle of people like, like sweet and sour chicken. There is a very long line so if you are in the back of that line your time to eat when you finally get to sit down is greatly reduced. All in all, I think 30 minutes is a good amount of time for a lunch period when you consider all the buyers.
ReplyDeleteI am someone that buys lunch pretty much everyday maybe every now and then I will pack, but I think there is enough time for lunch, just because it might take you 10 minutes to eat lunch, but then you got an extra 15-20 minutes to talk with your friends and see how there day is going. So I would say there is enough time just because you have time to get with your friends and talk how your day is going.
ReplyDeleteI think 30 minutes for lunch is good considering all of the people that buy. I pack my lunch everyday so I have a good amount of time to eat and talk with friends. The people that buy lunch may have a bit of a time crunch since they need to wait in line and still have time to eat. Some days it may seem like there is too much time because there is not a long line but other days there may be a long line so the time will seem shorter. Over all I think 30 minutes is a good amount of time considering buyers and having time to talk with friends.
ReplyDeleteLunch to me is the most important part of the day. It is the only time when I get any sanity, a half hour is long enough but there is still too many restrictions; signing out to go to the bathroom, not being able to use our phones, its ridiculous. We are in high school we do not need to be treated like children. There are too many rules! I am 18 years old and I have to sit in the cafeteria with 8th graders, eating school lunch and not even being able to get up and walk around? It is all nonsens. What are they afraid of? Also it takes 15 minutes just to get through the line! Lunch is half way over by the time I get my "food".
