Using Social Media for More

I am guessing many of you use at least one form of social media almost every day.  While Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat (let me know if there are others I should check out) are great ways to keep up with friends, celebrities, and the latest news from around the world, there is an aspect of those social media outlets which could be much more important to you in the future - job/career listings and advice.

Someday each and every one of you will be looking for a job.  It might be right now while in high school or it might be after high school or college.  How will you find out when and where a job is available?  My guess is that social media will be the answer to that question both now and in the future.  In order to get ready for the future, I encourage you to start following various employers on social media so you can get an idea of what they are looking for long before you really need that job.

To start following some of these employment outlets, search "Careers" on an app like Twitter and see what comes up.  Depending on your interests, you might want to follow businesses/corporations like @ESPNCareers (you will be amazed by the variety of careers they offer), @MicrosoftJobs, @CondeNastCareer (media brands like The New Yorker),or @TWDS_Careers (Disney Studios).  You could also follow career resources like @CareerBuilder or @MonsterCareers to see what kinds of careers might be available in the future and gain advice about building your resume, interviewing effectively, etc.

Ultimately, I want you to enjoy connecting with your friends on social media, but make the social media outlets work for you in the process of planning for the future.  Dream big when it comes to your future career.  I would love to someday say I know someone working at ESPN or Disney!

  1. I've always been told to be careful what you post online because a future employer might see it, but I've never thought to use social media for my future career. That is something I will definitely have to keep in mind!

    1. I was thinking the exact same thing as Robyn! Everyone always tells me to be careful on what I post on my social media accounts because a future boss may go to my twitter account or facebook page to see what I post so I have always been very careful about that. However, I've never thought about using those accounts to seach for a future job and to help plan for it! I think that's a great idea!

    2. I completely agree with you Robyn. You never know who will see what you post. Whether it's a future employer, future husband/wife, their family. Once it's out on the internet, it's out there for good!

    3. As we all know, it's important to be careful with what we put online. With the advent of social media people have to be even more careful than they ever have before.

Social media, while a useful tool, can also be used as a powerful weapon. It is easily used in cyber-bullying, along with many other actions that were previously not able to be done, since it is possible to be completly anonymous on the internet.

  2. I think it's interesting that you can use social media to help find a career for the future. I never thought about that. I think it would be very helpful for me to do that so I know what employers are looking for and then I can better prepare myself.

    1. Jessica, I agree with you because I had no idea twitter offered accounts to follow that had news about future careers! It's a great look into the future to see what employers are interested in for when an opportunity for an interview comes someone's way.

  3. I think this is a good incite on social media, while we always find it a way to catch up with friends we could also be looking for a job. This could be beneficial to me because I could get connected with future employers and put my name out there.

  4. We use social media for so many things, but I never thought to use it for jobs. It's a great idea to learn about the job and for them to get to know you. I also agree with being careful on what you put on social media because that could have a major impact on whether you get the job or not.

  5. I agree with Emily as well! I think its a great opportunity to find a job using social media sites because a large majority of people have them and are familiar with them. I also agree with Alexa about being careful what you post on them because even if you delete things, they are still on the internet.

  7. I never thought about looking for jobs through social media. From a personal standing though on the opposite side, I've seen how important social media is for a business. My family business has used social media as much as possible to get our name out there, and to show who we are and what we stand for. I must say though I have heard about the whole "careful what you post" argument, but as for the future I might actually follow/like potential job offering places, not a bad idea as a mere precautionary measure. I like what you said about knowing someone working at ESPN or Disney, hopefully for me you can say you know Jessica Cunningham, the famous author, one day.

P.S. I'm going to advertise here for a second, if you haven't already go like/follow Kona Ice Findlay please! We'll be around at Van Buren hopefully very soon so be sure to see where we're showing up at and see if there's an event we could come to for you (hint hint graduation parties).

  8. Wow, Mr. Bratt! You just opened a whole new door for me. I have never thought of social media as being another way to help us with future job opportunities. As of right now, I do not have a Twitter, Instagram, or a Snapchat. The only ones I have are Facebook and Pinterest, however, after reading your blog, I am going to reconsider! It is amazing of the different tools we have to help us with our future!

  9. It is an interesting topic especially since social media usually doesn't seem to hinder how people post/interact with it. While smart to censor what is submitted to social media(s), it's also important to understand that pictures once deleted are still available despite common belief. Pictures uploaded then deleted aren't erased completely if submitted via Facebook due to the company storing all photos in their database. If I'm not mistaken the website Linkedin is completely built around creating a professional image for employers so in turn they wouldn't have to cruise through all photos posted with awful Instagram filters. I think it's a really great opportunity to have more exposure and it even lets employers see exactly what kind of person one may be beyond a resumé.

  10. Social media is currently used for finding jobs but it is also used for finding a roommate for college. It is very convenient because you can search other students interested in having a dorm and you can find out a lot of information about them from what they post.

  11. It is amazing how times have changed. I am sure that my parents never thought there would be another way to look for a job besides the local paper and word of mouth. Social media has had such an impact on our generation, and after reading this it shows the versatility of it. Most teenagers of our generation will spend a countless number of hours staring at a social media site, but now it can be said that it's a useful tool and these hours might not be a waste of time.

  13. I agree with Esther because it really is crazy that you can find jobs through social media. But also through social media you can stay in touch with old friends as well and find a roommate for college as well.
